ACTION PLAN

THE JULIAN ALPS BIOSPHERE RESERVE ACTION PLAN

The Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve Action Plan is the document that brings together all the projects that the Biosphere Reserve, in collaboration with the local community and relevant stakeholders, is committed to implementing to pursue sustainable development objectives in its territory.

The document does not aim to determine the planning or management of the territory (it does not introduce any norms or rules), but it gathers and co-ordinates the best projects proposed and implemented by public and/or private entities, with the purpose of orienting the territory towards the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals on the 2030 Agenda.

The specific objectives of the Action Plan meet this guideline and were defined with reference to the three major objectives of the MAB UNESCO programme: Conservation, Sustainable Development and Logistics.

Sustainable development projects

These were proposed by a wide variety of entities, emphasising the participatory and inclusive nature of the Biosphere Reserve. Half of the projects involve one or a few Biosphere Reserve municipalities, more than a quarter involve the entire Biosphere Reserve, and a fifth involve the cross-border Biosphere Reserve territory, leading to positive results across the whole area involved. It is significant to point out that 42% of the projects already have connections linking the Italian and Slovenian territories, between the Julian Pre-Alps Nature Park and the Triglav Park, between stakeholders in the Italian and Slovenian Julian Alps area.

The Sustainable Development Goals outlined in the Action Plan amount to 16 out of 17. Those to which most projects refer are: No. 11 ‘’Sustainable Cities and Communities ‘’ , No. 8 ‘’ Dignified Work and Economic Growth‘’, No. 15 ‘’Life on Earth‘’, No. 12 ‘’Responsible Consumption and Production‘’, and No. 4 ‘’Quality Education‘’.

On Tuesday 30th November 2021, a webinar was held for the public presentation of the UNESCO MAB Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve Action Plan.
