THE FUNCTIONS

THE THREE FUNCTIONS OF THE BIOSPHERE RESERVE

CONSERVATION

contributing towards the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic variability

From a naturalistic-environmental point of view, the function relating to the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and generic variability is guaranteed by the presence within the Biosphere Reserve of several protected areas (parks, ZSC – Special Conservation Zones, ZPS – Special Protection Zones), equipped with management bodies and tools, as well as a high density of sites belonging to the Natura 2000 Network:

  • The Julian PreAlps Regional Nature Park which consists of one of the two large, protected areas within the Friuli Venezia Giulia region and falls entirely within the Biosphere Reserve;
  • The Val Alba Regional Nature Reserve covers a surface area of 3,000 hectares;
  • The Gran Monte Territorial Municipal Park as well as the Natisone estuaries as well as estuaries of the River Natisone;
  • 7 x Natura 2000 Special Conservation Zones (ZSC);
  • 2 x Natura 2000 Special Protection Zones (ZPS).

The area has already identified extraordinary internal naturalistic heritage with unique characteristics at both a national and European level, certified by the density of the protected areas.

DEVELOPMENT

To promote economic and human development from a socio-cultural and ecological point of view

The Aim of the Biosphere Reserve is to promote a vision for sustainable development that is deeply rooted in the values of the local territory, in line with the topics developed by the Alpine Convention: the quality of life in the Alpine area, tourism and productive areas as well as agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry, energy self-sufficiency and the Alpine ecology network.

LOGISTIC SUPPORT

Support provided for demonstration projects, environmental studies and training, research and monitoring activities regarding local, regional, national and global issues on the topic of conservation and sustainable development

The aim of this function is to educate, upkeep memories, carry out research, disseminate know-how, raise awareness about sustainability which are all actions that are of paramount importance thanks to the value of the natural and cultural wealth that exists within this context. The action carried out by the Reserve provides support both to administrative bodies as well as voluntary associations operating within different sectors, by creating networks, the operational support of the managing authority, the consolidation of internal relations and those of an international nature (Slovenia and Austria first and foremost), agreements entered into with research authorities, the management of coordinated projects, the identification of funding initiatives and the consolidation of the plural identity of this territory.
